Course Overview 
 

The purpose of the PADI Open Water Side Mount Diver specialty course is to familiarize divers with the skills, knowledge, planning, organization, procedures, techniques, problems, hazards and enjoyment of diving in double cylinders properly configured for open water side mount diving.

The Open Water Side Mount specialty course is intended to serve as a safe, supervised introduction to open water side mount diving within the limits of recreational diving limits. Training should emphasize fun and safety. The goals of PADI Open Water Side Mount Diver training are:

A. To develop the student's theoretical knowledge of side mount diving.
B. To enable the student to plan, organize and make safe side mount dives within their current certification levels.

This course covers the knowledge, skills and techniques for open water side mount diving.  The following is included: 

1.   Planning, procedures, techniques, problems and hazards of Open Water Side Mount diving
2.   Indentifying Open Water Side Mount Equipment
3.   Open Water Side Mount Equipment setup considerations
4.   Entry and exit procedures
 

Open Water Side Mount Course Prerequisites
 
 
 
A.  PADI Openwater Diver or have a qualifying certification from another training
     organization.
B.  Minimum age requirement: 15 years.
C.  As a pre-assessment before the course begins, a confined water session may
     include a scuba skills review. The PADI Skill Evaluation or Scuba Review
     program is an excellent way to accomplish such a review. 
 
D.  Dive data
1.   Four scuba dives
 
 
 
Student Equipment Requirements
 

1. All personal standard equipment including: 

Mask and fins
Two independent cylinders (40 cubic feet or larger required)
Exposure suit appropriate for local diving environment and depth, including hood, boots and gloves or mitts, if needed.
Quick-release weight belt or weight system, if needed
Two first stage regulators with a second stage (one with a seven foot hose for air sharing ), submersible pressure gauge, and a low pressure inflator hose
BCD properly configured for open water side mount diving with a low-pressure inflator
Complete instrumentation, including a means to monitor depth, time and direction.
Recreational Dive Planner (Table or ERDPml)
Diving tool or knife capable of cutting line
Slate with pencil
Whistle or other surface signaling device
Logbook
 
NOTE:  Student Side Mount Equipment Package must be purchased prior to class session
